GENERAL

WHICH LICENSE LEVEL IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Purchasers are only buying licenses to print the design. NO LICENSE LEVEL GRANTS OWNERSHIP OF THE DESIGN FILE, OR THE RIGHT TO RESELL, DISTRIBUTE, COPY, OR MAKE DERIVATIVE WORKS. The designer retains ownership of the design itself.

In plain words: You cannot give the file away, copy it, resell it, nor can you modify it and call it your own design.

Personal - Owners of a Personal Level license cannot sell or distribute prints.

Allows the buyer to print up to 100 copies for home use only. They cannot distribute or sell the printed items and they cannot distribute or sell the digital design. If they wish to print more than 100 copies they must buy multiple licenses.

Acceptable examples of use: Printing physical objects to be used around the home, car, or office.

Unacceptable examples of use: Printing over 100 copies of a design. Printing items to be given away such as a giveaway at a trade show, promotional items, etc. Selling any of the prints.

Business - Owners of a Business Level license cannot sell the prints, but they can distribute them.

Allows the buyer to print up to 1000 copies for business distribution purposes. They cannot sell the printed items and cannot distribute or sell the digital design. If they wish to print more than 1000 copies they will have to buy multiple licenses. Ex: A small business wants to print and give away iPhone cases as promotional items.

Acceptable examples of use: Handing out 3D printed pens at a trade show, handing out 3D printed business cards, putting 3D printed toys in grab bags to be given away at a function. These are acceptable because the owner of the Business Level license did not accept payment when distributing the prints.

Unacceptable examples of use: Making more than 1000 prints. Selling 3D printed pens, selling 3D printed toys, etc.

Commercial - Owners of a Commercial Level license can sell and distribute printed copies of the design.

Allows the buyer to print up to 2500 copies of this sweet design and to sell those copies for whatever price their heart desires. They do NOT have the right to distribute or sell the digital design. If they wish to print and sell more than 2500 copies they will have to buy multiple licenses.

Acceptable examples of use: Selling 3D printed pens, selling 3D printed toys, etc.

Unacceptable examples of use: Printing more than 2500 copies of the design. Selling or distributing the design itself (the file). Claiming they created the design or that they own the design.

WHY DOES MY DESIGN NEED TO GET APPROVAL?

For quality control purposes, all designs will have to be approved by admin before showing up on the site. Things that may keep a design from getting approved include: very poor quality, unprintability, obvious copyright issues, improper images, etc.

JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE PRINTED AN OBJECT ON THEIR PRINTER, DOES IT MEAN THAT IT WILL WORK ON MY PRINTER?

Not necessarily, but for the most part if it is printable, it is printable. There are situations however where you really need to have certain settings set on your printer to make it work. That is why we allow designers to give specific instructions on printing parameters.

I HAVE A POWDER (OR RESIN) BASED PRINTER, IS WATERTIGHT A SITE I CAN USE?

Yes. Anything that can be printed on a plastic extruder should be able to print properly on a powder or resin printer.

DO I OWN THE DESIGN AFTER I BUY IT?

NO! You are buying a license to print the design, but you do not own the design itself! The original designer holds the copyright and ownership for the design. If you violate the license agreement, you could face a lawsuit from the designer.

MY PRINT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THE ONE THE DESIGNER MADE, WHAT DO I DO?

Don't panic! Simply contact the designer and ask them if they have advice. Perhaps your printer needs a specific setting to make it work. If you still cannot get it to work, you can request a refund (within 14 days of purchase.)

I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH 3D PRINTING, DO I NEED A 3D PRINTER TO USE THIS SITE?

No, if you find a design you like, you can purchase and download it, then take it to a site like Shapeways.com and have them print it for you. Please keep in mind, Shapeways will ask if you want to sell the design on their site. You do NOT own the copyright to do this! You can have it printed for yourself, but you cannot sell or distribute the design file.

CAN I GIVE THE DESIGN FILE TO MY FRIEND?

You cannot distribute the design FILE. You can print off physical prints of an object and give those out (if you purchased the appropriate license level).

For example: You buy a design of an iPhone case with the San Diego Chargers logo on it (because they are awesome). You download the design file. You cannot give that file to anyone else, or sell it. You only own a license to print the file, but you do not own the file itself. However, you can print off multiple copies of the physical phone case and give those to family members or friends.

HOW MUCH $$$ CAN I MAKE?

70% of all design sales go to the designer. We cover the cc fees, hosting, etc.

WHAT ARE SOME QUICK TIPS FOR BEST DESIGN PRACTICES?

We're glad you asked! Your goal should always be: Your customer downloads the design, hits print, and gets the object, without the need to do anything else...

  1. Don't overprice! Don't think "retail price", think "app store pricing." For personal licenses, on items that are simple with only a few parts, we suggest $1-4. If it is more complex, or is an amazing design, perhaps you could go up to $10. For business and commercial, remember that the print run is limited, you are not selling Coca Cola the right to print 1 million copies! We suggest roughly $20-40 for business, and $100-$200 for commercial. Most of these licenses will be bought by small start up businesses that want to do small runs. They do not have the money to pay $500+ for a license.
  2. Make sure the design is saved in the correct orientation. It may need support structures if printed right side up, and not need supports if printed on its side. In this case, save the file on it's side. Make it SUPER easy for people to print, without any need for CAD experience.
  3. Scale properly! Save the design at the desired size for printing. Do not expect the customer to know how to scale (we both know it's not hard, but don't EXPECT them to know how). If a statue will look best at 5" tall, save the design at 5" tall. You can always check "this design is scalable", which will allow intermediate and advanced users to look specifically for designs that can be altered.
  4. Aim for plastic extruder printers! You may have an awesome $20k powder machine, but most of your customers will have plastic extruders. If the design is difficult to print on a plastic extruder, you have just cut off a lot of potential customers.
  5. Give LOTS of instructions! Do you prefer certain perimeter speeds, layer heights, shell thicknesses, etc? Make sure and put that in your instructions. Remember, the easier it is to print, the less people will ask for a refund due to an inability to print the design.
  6. Go for sellable and interesting things! Halo style figurines are cool and all, but things that sell are kids toys, seasonal items, gifts, household items, phone cases, etc.
  7. Know all the basics. We assume that if you have printable designs you already know about manifold edges, watertight meshes, etc. If you don't know what this means, you may want to do a bit more research into designing for 3D printers.

I HAVE ONLY PRINTED MY DESIGNS ON POWDER (OR RESIN) PRINTERS, I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WILL WORK ON A PLASTIC EXTRUDING PRINTER. WHAT TO DO?

Please make sure and clearly state in your description, preferably right at the top, that you have only printed it on this type of printer. This way, your customers will not feel like your design is bad if it does not work on their printer. Also, put in your description that you would love a pic of it printed on a plastic printer, hopefully someone comes along, prints it, and sends you a pic you can put up.

CAN I ALTER AN EXISTING DESIGN AND UPLOAD THE NEW DESIGN FOR SALE?

No! That is called a derivative work. If you alter someone's design, it is still partially their design. You cannot claim ownership of the new design. Doing this could cause your designer account to be terminated.

WHEN DO I GET PAID?

We put a hold on all funds! For the first sales, we will hold your funds for 30 days, after that we will hold your funds for 14 days. We do this:

  1. To confirm you are a legit designer and are not trying to scam some quick money.
  2. To give customers time to request refunds if the design is not printable, or otherwise non-functional.

WHY WAS MY DESIGN FLAGGED AND REMOVED?

  1. The most common reason - it may not look like a fully finished piece of work.
  2. It's a working gun, gun part, or overly sexual. We don't have any problems at all with people owning guns and sex toys, but WaterTight is meant to be a website for all ages to use therefore disruptive items will be removed.
  3. Saved in the wrong orientation. Did you save your design in an usual orientation? Make sure that the .STL file is saved in the most optimum for printing. For example, you say your design does not need support structures, but that is only if you print it upside down. They you should have the file saved upside down. The customer should be able to simply download and hit print, without needing to re-orient the design!
  4. Not printing correctly. If enough people cannot get the print to work, it will be flagged. Perhaps you needed to give more detailed instructions. For example, did your print need slow perimeter speeds or thick top and bottom layers? Maybe you are an expert with 3D printing, but remember, your customers are not! Make it as simple as possible for them. You will sell more designs if your customers know that when they buy, all they have to do is hit print and it works!

CAN I USE TRADEMARKED OR COPYRIGHTED IMAGES/FIGURES/DESIGNS?

Not unless you own the trademark or copyright! For example, you cannot put up Dora the Explorer glasses, unless you own the rights to Dora the Explorer (which is owned by Nickelodeon).

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DO PUT UP TRADEMARKED OR COPYRIGHTED IMAGES/FIGURES/DESIGNS?

  1. Users may flag it and we'll remove it.
  2. The owner of the trademark or copyright may contact either YOU or WaterTight to request a removal (a "take down notice"). If they contact you, remove it ASAP, don't play around with trademark or copyright law! If they contact us, we will follow the legal procedures outlined by the DMCA. Following these procedures, we will remove it from the site, and let you know. If you appeal and say you DO own the copyright, we will put it back up and let the other party know you disputed it. At that point, they may chose to seek legal action against you to have you take it down.

Enough removals and your account may be terminated.

Please note, you can be sued by the owner of the copyrighted material! Please only post up original designs for which you own all the rights.
